Whether it be the luxurious scented candle you’ve never used, expensive china that has never been plated, or diamond jewellery still sitting in the box, so many of us are guilty of saving things — waiting for life to present us with the perfect opportunity to bring them out, or break them in.
Amongst the many lessons this year has taught us so far, perhaps the most important is that there is no time like the present. Many of us will spend the weeks and months ahead readjusting to life indoors; embracing simple pleasures, the comforts of home, and the discomforts of the world beyond the realms of our living rooms. This begs the question – what are we saving this stuff for?
Instead, turn the ordinary moments – if not extraordinary moments – ones that embrace the now. Watch Tiger King in your favourite costume necklace, sipping tea from your family heirloom goblet. Reach deep into your wardrobe for your next virtual Houseparty ensemble. Set the table with the glassware you were saving for that dinner party. Light the candle.
The silver lining might be thin, but it’s there for the taking.
