Ways to wear red this Chinese New Year Be auspicious and on trend in 2019 in bold red attire

Chinese New Year is just around the corner, and as the Year of the Pig begins, it’s time to bring the power of red into your wardrobe. For centuries, the colour has symbolised prosperity, passion, love and luck: all things we’d love to see more of over the next 12 months.

But the bold qualities of red also make it a hard colour to wear. To get it right, pay attention to styling: dark colours like black and deep navy have enough presence to balance the tone’s strong impact without adding to the noise. Red should also usually only be worn as one layer unless you’re feeling particularly brave. Outerwear by brands such as Fendi and Wales Bonner, which feature pieces that are easy to wear over more pared-back outfits, would serve you well here.

Of course, if you want to commit to wearing red, one good way of doing it is to embrace its daring presence fully. Japanese brand Doublet has created an exclusive collection for Lane Crawford that does just this, and combines a particularly buoyant shade of red with its signature embellishment on a top and trousers. There’s surely no more confident, or fortuitous, way to ring in the changing year.
