TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION

How two Hong Kong artists are fusing old with new

Words by Bridget Barnett

Who couldn’t use a little spark (or two) of inspiration right now? Blending ancient art forms with cutting-edge technology and a heavy dose of creativity, these two projects provide just that.

VICTOR WONG: INK ART + AI TECHNOLOGY

Victor Wong at 3812 Gallery via @3821gallery

Working with artificial intelligence ink artist Gemini, Hong Kong multimedia mogul Victor Wong is also breathing new life into ancient Chinese artistry with the creation of a robotic arm that plots virtual terrain, dips a brush into ink and water, and reproduces the terrain on fresh xuan paper. This result is unique artwork with intricate lines and shading.

Samsung shares Wong’s same desire to explore the possibilities of technology and art, and have collaborated on the Samsung Frame 4.0 TV which brings these works into the home via “Art Mode” – instead of fading to black, The Frame’s display transforms into a digital image. The model will be launching alongside Wong’s exclusive exhibition at Lane Crawford.

The Victor Wong x A.I.Gemini exhibition will take place at Lane Crawford ifc mall between May 6 to June 8.

SKY YUTAKA: PAPER CRAFT + FACIAL RECOGNITION

With traditional Chinese crafting in decline and a decreasing perceived value of hand-made objects, Hong Kong-based design studio Sky Yutaka takes the humble art of paper craft and reinvigorates it with facial recognition sensors. The result? A kinetic lighting installation resembling a flower that’s clever enough to respond to human emotion, opening up a “unit” when a smile is detected. The project explores traditional crafts in the era of digital design, and renews an appreciation for a fast disappearing practice.

The Sky Yutaka exhibition will take place at Lane Crawford Home store, Pacific Place, between April 21 to June 8.
