Finnish American architect and designer Eero Saarinen created the Womb lounge chair in 1948 for Knoll Studio, after Florence Knoll requested a chair “that was like a basket full of pillows.” Saarinen succeeded, with a ground-breaking design that blew away the trend for large, overstuffed chairs. The inviting embrace of this soft, shell-shaped seat brings a sense of warmth to any room and provides a sense of protection and calm that gives the chair its name.
With graceful, wing-like curves, the three-legged Shell chair is one of the best-known pieces by the master of Danish furniture design, Hans J. Wegner. With a lacquered walnut wood frame and black leather upholstery, it sits at the intersection of durability, comfort and style. The avant-garde design received a mixed reception from the public in 1963 but, when reintroduced in 1997, the Shell chair won widespread praise - a testament to Wegner’s truly timeless vision.
Børge Mogensen, the founding designer of Danish design house Frederica, designed the Spanish Chair in 1958. This charmingly industrial piece embodies the traditional craftsmanship that lies at the heart of the Frederica name. The sturdy, oiled European oak frame is complemented with hand-stitched Swedish saddle leather, meticulously tanned and dyed for four weeks to achieve an alluring patina.
