THE STORY OF GABO GUZZO
A tale rich with art, artisanship and exquisite luxury
Words by Bridget Barnett
Italian-born, London-based Gabo Guzzo was educated with an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College in London, and an MSc in Economics from Università Bocconi in Milan. Also an author with an impressive art career, Gabo is very much an interdisciplinary artist, with a passion for fusing creativity with innovation, and merging disciplines like science, technology, writing, and architecture.
Dedicated to Italian artisanship, Gabo developed his expertise further, along with his understanding of high-fashion and jewellery. With a “more art, less production” approach to creation, Gabo crafts made-in-Italy handbags and clutches using dying techniques from the 40s and 50s. Aiming to make designs that will be used and loved for decades to come, Gabo aligns with a more sustainable, slow fashion movement. The materials he chooses are exceptionally luxurious – think sustainably-sourced exotics skins and gold-plated brass. Each piece is finished with a gemstone clasp, such as blue sapphire, hawk’s eye, black onyx or Amazonite.
Gabo debuted his first collection of handbags in 2019. Doubling as truly exceptional sculptures, each piece is marked as one-of-a-kind with a numeric code on a metal plate. Exhibiting striking and almost futuristic designs, his handbags are accompanied by a handwritten card outlining the gemstone featured, along with the number of karats. Gabo’s exotic pieces come housed in custom protective trunks, which also double as decorative pieces. The artisans who make each bag add their signature inside it as a sign of commitment, authenticity and pride.
