Art and fashion have long been friendly bedfellows so when it came to Hong Kong art month, we invited our favourite upcoming brands to take on a blank canvas and create capsules with the straightforward brief ‘What Is Art?’ Some took cues from abstract modernism, others from old masters. The results are dashing, distinctive and highly collectible.

New York based Tome, interpreted optic art with a powerful graphic print that forms a bandeau top on a clean white shirt; a striking shirt dress and tonal pleat swing skirt that dazzles the eye. Women are always on Sandy Liang’s radar and she focused on the mesmerizing work by Vermeer ‘The Girl With the Pearl Earring.’ She translated that knowing innocence in a series of decorative white cotton shirts and a wrap round apron skirt.

The great American artist, Alexander Calder, who is known for his playful abstract organic works inspired Nohke’s optic blue and black T-shirts while R Collective lapped up on the colour palette of Sonia Delauney for subtly patterned knitwear. The very act of painting captured the imagination of Simon Miller. He daubed the backside of pristine white jeans with masterful strokes of pigment in cobalt blue and fuchsia and there are even matching Bonsai bucket bags. ‘What is Art?’ – right now it is ready to wear.
