Stella McCartney’s Menswear MomentThe designer’s first-ever men’s collection is finally here
Fifteen years since launching her eponymous womenswear label, this season Stella McCartney makes her first-ever move into menswear. The debut collection is founded on a quintessential British style that draws on iconic art and sub-cultures across the eras, all fused with the designer’s innate understanding of how we want to dress today.
But why menswear, and why now? “It was something we had been talking about for a long time,” the designer tells Lane Crawford. “I had so many men in my life asking me, ‘will you do menswear? When are you doing menswear?’ so it was something we had always thought about. I don’t know if there’s a right time to launch anything, like there’s never a right time to have a child, there’s never a right time to leave a job and face a new challenge; you know a challenge is a challenge. I was happy where we were with the womenswear so it felt like the right time to give the Stella woman a complement: The Stella man.”
“I had so many men in my life asking me, ‘will you do menswear? When are you doing menswear?’”
This Stella man is a culmination of all the men in the British designer’s life. From her husband, to her father and her friends, but also those who have inspired her - the musicians, the artists and filmmakers, both of today and of tomorrow. The collection, she says, is a wardrobe that crosses over so many different expressions.
The collection beautifully captures the spirit and nostalgia of London’s musical history in an effortlessly modern way: graphic tees are full of cheeky British charm while elegant swallow and trippy flower embroideries reflect McCartney’s signature playfulness.
