SIMPLE, ENDURING HOME DESIGN
Our favourite designers and makers at the forefront of the new craft movement
From Baroque to Bauhaus, the pages of design history have for centuries illustrated a move from elaborate decoration to more pared-back, refined design. And while craft was briefly overlooked during the Industrial Revolution, we’re seeing a jubilant return in many countries to their heritage of skilled joinery.
This symbiosis of refinement and craft is the hallmark of PINCH. The UK-based furniture and interiors company was established in 2004 by designers Oona Bannon and Russell Pinch, the latter of whom worked under the iconic Terence Conran. The pair sought simply to create furniture they wanted to live with — timeless pieces that reflect their quiet, elegant aesthetic. Each piece is meticulously crafted of only the highest-quality materials, exemplifying their dedication to process.
The duo’s collection of cabinetry, beds, chairs and tables all demonstrate a modern aesthetic, with some of the joinery nodding to a more rustic, almost Shaker style. These are complemented with a collection of lighting and mirrors that artfully draw together materials as diverse as copper, tulipwood, linen and banana fibre.
Fortunately, PINCH is not the only firm enjoying the renewed focus on craft. Shanghai-based Stellar Works stands for the same principles, bringing together East and West, old and new, craft and industry. “We have chosen this path between the old and the new because I believe good design is timeless design,” explains CEO and founder Yuichiro Hori. Collaborating with a selection of the industry’s best designers, including Yabu Pushelberg and Space Copenhagen, the studio’s collections showcase an uncluttered lifestyle made easy with beautifully crafted pieces for every room in a modern home.
Hong Kong-based André Fu brought the same approach to the André Fu Living collection of furniture and lifestyle accessories. The designer describes the underlying aesthetic as “delightfully quiet”, adding that “the pieces are all designed to subtly complement and enhance different environments”. The pieces are cohesive together or make a quiet yet confident statement individually, and are created with artisans from regions that specialise in a variety of techniques and material finishes.
We say long live the craft renaissance.
