Inspo Lane: Sustainable Christmas Trees from 5 Local Artists

How to go green (and red)

This festive season, why not make the most of your celebrations while also balancing eco-conscious decisions? Lane Crawford invites five local artists to create striking and meaningful sustainable Christmas tree displays to motivate change and present a new way of looking at tried-and-true traditions. Below, read more about the inspiration behind their artwork and tips for how to make the holidays more environmentally friendly.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your tree.

Made with recycled disco balls from the Lane Crawford warehouse, my Christmas tree is an anti-war sculpture that turns destructive hatred into love and joyful energy. If each country took the money they spend on military expenditure and spent it on preparing Christmas gifts instead, it would make the world a much happier place.

Makui Ma

Our tree is called “Ball Ball Tree” and it features colourful plastic balls collected through social media platforms, toys that children are no longer playing with. From a distance, they look like dazzling Christmas tree lights.

Each year, I start decorating my Christmas tree in November and leave it up until Chinese New Year! I’ll use anything that I have at home - presents from friends, old wrapping paper, and even food. I never spend money on new decorations.

What message do you hope to convey through your artwork?

We express our love of pop culture through our art. We hope that our works resonate with our audience, and that they inspire and provoke questions about today’s world.

Cynthia Mak

How would you describe your art style?

My mission is to spread joy and love through bold and vibrant colours, and I hope that my artwork can brighten your day.

The inspiration for my tree comes from my first art series “Geometric Characters,” which is based on reinterpreting Chinese characters as geometric shapes. The character ‘樂’ meaning ‘joy’ perfectly describes the vibe of Christmas, and its angles and shapes also remind me of a Christmas tree.

Dennis Soap

I hope that my fantastical artwork can make the world a more diversified place. Inspired by the story of The Tower of Babel, I set out to make a Christmas tree that symbolises desire. As for creative materials, I utilised multicoloured colander baskets often found in the corner shops of grassroots areas, as well as other everyday objects and household items like plastic folders and plastic bags.
