In life, it always pays to be a specialist and what could be more appealing than being a connoisseur of Hermès handbags? Nicola Robinson, founder of the London based vintage store, Maia, is just that – a bona fide Hermès geek.

“I specialise in sourcing bags that Hermès does not make anymore so either it is a limited edition piece or a discontinued size, leather or colour – these elements add another level of exclusivity.  It’s extremely hard to source vintage Hermès in immaculate condition, so the value is increased,” says the dealer who unearths these treasures from far and wide.

This month, Lane Crawford’s BLITZ will be launching its veritable line-up of iconic vintage styles including the Kelly, Birkin (one crafted in brown crocodile with a lime green strap) the Himalaya (in leather and toile) and the ever-sweet Constance – one in a particularly delicious shade of candy floss pink.

Falling in a swoon with a pre-loved bag, does take psychological adjustment. But exceptional quality and craftsmanship should have a long lifespan and like fine art or objets, be passed through several lucky hands. The clue is in finding out how and why the handbag resonates with you.

Some of the favourite pieces that have passed through Robinson’s hands include a 32cm Kelly in black box leather and red ostrich, a 20cm Kelly in green moyen lizard and a version in black croc with diamonds. Robinson is used to servicing extravagant requests. “One client wanted twenty rare bags for his wife's birthday.  Clever guy - his investment has probably doubled by now,” says Robinson. For once, buying what you love really does make financial as well as sartorial sense.
