Earlier this year, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan curated an exhibition entitled ANIMAlità to celebrate objects of animal-themed pottery design, playing with the subject of animal nature, both literally and creatively.

Italian artisanal ceramics brand Bosa invited an international team of designers to create a collection of objects that looked at the animal kingdom in a new light. One of our favourites, Sam Baron’s, looked to Greek mythology to inspire his three-piece collection in which a bull becomes a Minotaur, the ram is seen as a sacrificial animal and the horse becomes a fantastical figure like the unicorn. No wonder Philippe Starck has touted him as one of the most important designers of the next decade.

Meanwhile, Elena Salmistraro took inspiration from the armadillo with references to the Egyptian scarab, incorporating ritualistic and symbolic elements that enrich the visual elegance of her cocooned art object.

But the standout piece was Jaime Hayon’s rendition; a fusion of various animals interpreted from a very personal perspective with an expressive graphic nature inspired by an African motif.

These limited-edition pieces are more than just objects for the home – they are works of art that tell a unique and personal story about their designer.
