City guide: Mats Klingberg’s Tokyo The menswear expert reveals his favourite spots in the Japanese capital

“Park Hyatt was the hotel I stayed in when I first visited Tokyo about fifteen years ago, and while I’ve stayed in lots of other hotels, it’s the one I enjoy coming back to the most. I’m all for newness when it comes to lots of things, but when it comes to a good hotel, I just want it to be the same.

I’ve stayed in all the suites, and the ones I like the most are the smallest ones, the Park Suites. They’re located on the corners, which gives you at least a 180-degree view of Tokyo, and if it’s a clear day you’ll have a beautiful view of Mount Fuji as well. The floor plan is nice and cosy and gives you all the space you need. I also like a good soak in the bathtub.”

“While I tend to opt for smaller bars in Tokyo, I never tire of visiting the New York Grill at Park Hyatt. It has great views over Tokyo, and at night the city is covered with lots of red lights that sit on top of all the buildings. There’s always a great jazz band playing, which creates a very nice atmosphere. I always have a good Japanese whisky with a massive ice ball in it.”

“I love this new restaurant called Hiroo Onogi. There are tables to sit at, but when you’re only two or three people dining together I usually opt for the counter, so you can see the action in the kitchen. Hiroo Onogi uses cherry wood chips to smoke lots of different things – this makes the restaurant smell amazing, and the food taste great. I’ll have anything on the menu.”

“I love to visit the Nezu museum now and then. The museum has been around since 1941, but in 2009 it reopened with a completely new museum building designed by one of my favourite architects, Kengo Kuma. Besides the beautiful building there’s also a beautiful garden, and of course, lots of great art to look at.”
