BEAUTY HEROES:
ANGELA CAGLIA

The queen of clean shows us how effective her skincare solutions are

The facialist to Helena Christensen, Minnie Driver and Barbra Streisand has been nicknamed the Hollywood Glow Girl for her ability to impart radiance to the complexion in just a single session. And two years ago, Angela Caglia launched her own skincare line, a clean collection that’s free of harmful chemicals but makes use of the latest skincare technology and falls within the realm of luxury — two aspects that traditionally haven’t been associated with “green” skincare brands.

The line harnesses the power of meadowfoam seed oil, which is deeply penetrating but also assists in balancing skin — as well as having a relatively long shelf life compared to many other natural ingredients. But it’s Angela’s rose quartz items, whether the vibrating roller or the weighty Self Love Rose Quartz Eye Mask, that have beauty mavens talking. Read on for more wisdom from the Glow Girl herself.

What does “clean beauty” mean to you?

Clean beauty asks for accountability from brands in focusing on natural, non-toxic and quality ingredients. It also integrates the word “clean” in a holistic way that not only focuses on the health of the customer but also the health of our world, with sustainability efforts when sourcing ingredients, designing packaging and picking manufacturers. My personal approach to clean beauty includes my “No No List” of ingredients banned from my products. I would never use these ingredients on my celebrity clients and I would never use them in my products. Sourcing the best, cruelty-free botanicals, oils and ingredients paired with eco-luxe packaging is the Angela Caglia clean-beauty standard!

What sets your line apart from others in the beauty world?

Many luxury skincare lines contain ingredients on my “No No List”, and other natural lines contain too many essential oils that can sensitise the skin and cause inflammation. The best thing for our skin is to protect and nourish its barrier and keep it in homoeostasis — that’s why I work to create formulas that are optimal for all skin types, especially difficult-to-treat sensitive skin.

Tell us about your own personal beauty routine.

Every day I wake up and go to my fridge to take out my rose quartz roller, which I love to gently roll on my face to stimulate blood flow and assist with lymphatic drainage. It instantly alleviates puffiness and dark circles on nights I don’t get the best sleep. Next, I rinse with cold water and then apply my Detox Serum and follow with my Soufflé Moisturizer. Every other day, I use my Facial In A Mask sheet mask — which contains an active hydrating and anti-ageing facial serum — in combination with my rolling routine.

At night, I find the cleansing ritual very important, and I focus on the love energy of the rose quartz tools and the textures of my skincare line and aromatherapy to relax and soothe me before bed. I begin by cleansing away the day’s oils, pollution and [make-up]/category/Makeup/beauty/makeup/) with my Anti-Pollution Cleansing Oil, which is launching soon, and follow with either my new Daily Botanical Serum added to my Soufflé Moisturizer or a new exfoliating night serum with lactic and glycolic acids I’m testing for launch early next year. I warm my new Vibrating Rose Quartz Sculpting Roller by dipping it in hot water for 30 seconds then dry it. I then turn it on and massage my face with the warm stone to help further penetrate the products and relax me before bed.

We hear a lot about beauty rollers these days. What’s the best way to use your vibrating roller?

First, apply a pea-sized amount of my Soufflé Moisturizer to the back of your hand, then add a few drops of my soon-to-launch Daily Botanical Serum for added slip and extra nourishment for the skin. Using the index finger and thumb of your opposite hand, gently massage the moisturiser into your eyebrows, a place where we tend to carry a lot of tension. From your eyebrows, move in upward and outward circular strokes across your forehead to your hairline. For your cheekbones, using either your own knuckles or my knuckle-shaped Rose Quartz Gua Sha Lifting Tool, gently massage in upward strokes towards your occipital bone, avoiding the eye area. The goal is to gently sculpt upward, moving against the forces of gravity. Finish with a gentle ear massage and light pull on your lobes for the ultimate at-home spa experience facial.

How would you refute the misconception that clean or green beauty isn’t high-tech?

Today’s luxury green beauty, and my line in particular, blends the best of both worlds, much like the way Tesla does in the automobile industry. We use high tech, whether it’s the method by which we extract the purest and most potent ingredients using distilled aromatic waters called hydrosols or it’s the most recent research and technological advancements in the cosmetic industry to ensure that our formulations are the most efficacious and sought-after in the world.
