But up close, diamonds are also what we look at in detail. So, when we design, we’re always thinking about those moments: how a diamond catches the eye from a distance, and how we can use the diamond to delight the wearer.

Craftsmanship is everything. At State Property, we use natural diamonds to enhance the design of each piece, not just decorate it. The way a diamond is set, like the sharpness of a prong, or the tightness of a pavé for example, can completely change how a piece is perceived. One small misstep, and the magic of the diamond, and perhaps the piece, can be lost. How important is the craftsmanship involved in showcasing the brilliance and character of natural diamonds in your designs?

To me, craftsmanship is essential—it accounts for almost everything. The lion’s mane that moves, the sea lion’s ball that spins, the flower petals that sway... The pavé setting, too, must be so smooth that it doesn’t catch on to something as delicate as stockings. All of these details depend entirely on the skills of the craftsmen. Craftsmanship is what allows me to welcome close, hands-on appreciation, knowing that each piece will meet that level of scrutiny with confidence and beauty.

What draws you to natural diamonds as a material for your jewellery design?

I feel that diamonds are an extraordinary gift from the divine — treasures that have rested deep within the earth for hundreds of millions of years. They carry so much history and romance, and there’s something truly special about that. Even when they look similar at first glance, no two diamonds are ever exactly the same, and that’s something I really appreciate, too.

In what ways do natural diamonds inspire your craftsmanship and design details?

Honestly, it all depends on each stone. I can’t decide on a design until I actually see the particular diamond in person. Even when they are the same size, the slightest differences in colour or proportion can completely change where the stone belongs and what role it should play – and that’s something I find very fascinating. On the other hand, when it comes to melee diamonds used in pavé settings, I don’t think of them individually but rather as a single “colour” or “surface” element. When countless tiny diamonds come together, they create textures, nuances, and gradients of light. I consider them almost like paints on a palette.

Can you share how working with natural diamonds connects to tradition, sustainability, or emotional value in your creations?

Gemstones are not only beautiful—they hold people’s memories and emotions and carry them into the future. Throughout history, jewels have symbolised wealth, yet I also see them as works of art meant to be passed down to future generations. To me, the very act of wearing and passing down these natural diamonds over time is, in its own way, a form of sustainability.
