From the return of original ‘90s poster girl Winona Ryder to supermodel Cindy Crawford, chokers and silky slip dresses - the best of the ‘90s has officially returned.
We are thankfully yet to see the return of streaky highlights and marker-thin brows, but at the forefront of the decade’s beauty are some major lip trends that are easy to incorporate for the most modern of looks.
Frosted Lips
Anticipation of the looming Millennium drew futurism to the spotlight during the ‘90s. When it came to beauty, an intergalactic touch came through in baby pink lipsticks with a metallic frosted sheen. Today’s modern approach starts with a deeper base colour, coupled with a subtle pearly overlay.
Lip Liner
Heavy lip liner, at least one or two shades darker than your lipstick colour, was all the rage in the ‘90s. Today’s modern approach is less about contrasting shades, and more about the ‘overlining’ application technique that extends the lip shape past the lip line, creating an illusion of a plumper pout.
Brick Brown
Iconically worn by Winona Ryder in 1994’s cult classic movie Reality Bites, the matte brick brown lip became a staple in every womans beauty stash (remember M.A.C’s Spice?). Today, the shade’s revival is largely credited to a modern day pop culture icon, the youngest Kardashian clan member Kylie Jenner, whose signature beauty look features a matte, plumper take on the trend.
Nude
Opaque, glossy nude was the go-to lipstick shade for ‘90s style icon Kate Moss. Today, expect a little more depth from the nudes of now, with more natural shades and even more moisturising formulations.
