In a world filled with work commitments, over-commitments and a committed relationship to our phones, we’re all guilty of running on empty and not properly taking care of ourselves.
While your lifestyle choices might mean you’re already noticing the classic signs of fatigue - how could you miss the headaches, dizziness, irritability and sleepiness? – what you might not realise is the havoc it could be playing on your skin – namely, dull, uneven skin tone, enlarged pores, age spots, dry skin, sagging and wrinkles.
Here, Lane Crawford determines the skincare saviours that can help in the fight back against the common causes of beauty exhaustion.
Glued to your computer late into the night
Are late nights in the office starting to feel like Groundhog Day? The constant lack of sleep will be showing in your skin as much as it will be in your stress levels. “When we are sleep-deprived, our skin takes on a pasty, puffy and more wrinkled appearance - formerly svelte figures begin to resemble that famous “Doughboy” of baking fame,” says Dr. Nicholas Perricone, leading dermatologist and nutritionist behind Perricone MD.

A new found dependence on Deliveroo
A busy lifestyle usually means we’re snacking on-the-go and unable to fit in a wholesome home-made meals and the telltales are likely to be showing up on your skin. “Many refined carbohydrates found in fast food cause an inflammatory response in the body which promotes increased pore size and puffiness, as well as dark under eye circles, loss of tone and firmness and loss of facial contours,” says Dr. Perricone.

Heavy-handed sessions with the wine bottle
Whether it is a night out with friends, or a night at home with a wind down glass of something to destress after a long day at work, we’re all guilty of overdoing it on occasion when it comes to alcohol. Dr. Perricone reveals that this habitual habit is actually has more of an impact on skin aging than we might at first think, “Alcohol creates inflammation throughout the body including the skin, resulting in effects that far outlast dehydration. Dullness, enlarged pores, discolouration, sagging and lack of resilience are some of the short and longer-term effects.”

An influx of “I need a cigarette” moments
If you’re a smoker - or a reformed smoker constantly pushed into stressful situations - you might be caving into those cigarettes more than you want too. “Cigarettes deplete the skin of oxygen and vital nutrients, reducing blood flow while temporarily raising blood pressure,” explains Dr. Perricone. “This results in a grey, pallid, lifeless and unhealthy-looking complexion and if it continues, it will also cause dry, leathery looking skin, premature deep lines, wrinkles and loss of radiance.”
