Salone del Mobile 2018 and more Sharing by Benwu Studio
For one week every April, the world of furniture and lighting descends on Milan where the design agenda is set for the year. During this pivotal exhibition, the city transforms into a remarkable display of visionary installations, exclusive presentations and events hosted by the industry’s most powerful players. This year, we invited Shanghai and Beijing based design agency Benwu Studio, to highlight the newness of Salone del Mobile 2018. The multi-disciplinary studio areas of expertise include product, set and interior design. As well as taking part in Lane Crawford’s “Visions From A New Generation” exhibition in Shanghai in 2015, the team have completed a series of successful collaborations with international brands such as Hermes and Vacheron Constantin.

Immersive Experiences
People are seeking to participate in deep, immersive experiences that enable them to escape from the reality and enrich their experience of the world around them. Experiences that deliver a sense of cinema and thrill that are truly worthy of sharing.
Dimore Studio is one of the most unique representatives among Milan design studios - it always promises a sensorial journey. It’s “Transfer” exhibition is a highlight that cannot be missed, this season the duo created installations with their neighbouring Studio, presenting five different worlds though a series of tents in varying themes. Each tent has its own atmosphere, and showcased pieces from the studio’s archive collections and designers’ personal collections, as well as the darkly lit perimeter, distinctive scent and soundtrack. Visitors navigated their way through the carefully curated compositions via tiny “windows”. In its Silk Road traveller tent, it displayed many personal objects with an oriental style to match a series of Italian furniture from the 40s to 70s. The background soundtrack was from Jimmy Scott’s “Nothing Compares 2U,” as if the curator is trying to recall a story from his memory. More immersive experiences should be seen in the commercial space design in the near future, heavily influenced by the work of film directors David Lynch and Wes Anderson.
Really
Upcycled end-of-life textiles
Danish textile brand Really invited designers including Raw Edges, Front, Benjamin Hubert/Layer, Christien Meindertsma, Jo Nagasaka, Claesson Koivisto Rune, and Jonathan Olivares to design new furniture pieces made using unusual textile boards. This young brand developed a new Solid Textile Board through by upcycling end-of-life textiles from fashion and textile industries. Exhibition curator Jane Withers commented, “these pieces also quietly resonate as emblems of the complexity of our times and changing understandings of waste and environmental impact”, whilst at the same time provide compelling furnishing solutions. The purpose of this project is to “show how beautiful things can be made from the massive global problem of textile waste,” and showcase the performance, ease of processing, and surface treatment of these upcycled materials.
SKONNE
Technology Aided Customisation
The creative carpet creator was showcasing their new project in the Ventura Future exhibition area, which took place simultaneously with Salone del Mobile in Milan. The brand’s designer created a nearly infinite canvas that can be accessed online through their website and mobile app. Users can zoom in and out, cut out their favourite patterns, and start creating their own customisation. The brand will expand its pattern template offerings and fabric choices in the future, giving a digital edge to carpet designs.
