Think of Indonesian style and sarongs, batik and lace might come to mind. For Toton Januar, winner of this year’s International Woolmark Asia Prize, his country has many other traditions and age old techniques to explore. “We were so excited to explore and manipulate wool with Indonesian craftsmanship, and give greater meaning to ‘people making things for people,” says Januar who almost experienced an ‘out of body’ experience on receiving the award.

Januar, who was raised by his seamstress single mother developed a fascination with artisanal crafts at a young age and later studied media broadcasting before enrolling on a short course at Parsons in New York before launching his own line in 2013. The winning Woolmark collection, in store now, is rich with detail and texture. Januar, working with wool weaves and embroidery, designed apron topped slim skirts, sheath dresses with a play of geometric patterns, and tie back jackets emblazoned with embroideries of native flora. In shades of ginger, vanilla and palest pink, each piece is full of fresh promise.
