A Palette Of Fragrance What if it all stripped down to scent?
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the packaging of a fragrance: a bottle that is the hero of your vanity table, from a brand you love, with a product name and description that conjures up your exact mood - or exactly who you want to be - at that moment.
But what if conjuring up a visual representation of a fragrance came down simply to its scent, and nothing else?
And so in an experiment, Lane Crawford wrapped up six different fragrance bottles (hiding everything but the nozzle) and gave them to six of our favourite emerging artists. Our instruction was to create a piece of artwork that re-interprets the scent into a visual presentation - without being influenced by the packaging.
How will the artists interpretations align with the look and feel of each fragrance? Slide the dot from left to right on each artwork to find out.

“Without knowing what the bottle (the cover) looks like, I created this piece based on the famous saying, “Don't judge a book by its cover.”
It represents all the complexities that are inside, filling the bottle to the brim and bursting out into an explosion of fragrance.”

“I related the scent to a dark, rich violet red flower which is sensual, elegant, mysterious, feminine and delicate. It doesn’t show signs of weakness or fragility, and as the flower blossoms it shows the power of growth and independence.”

“The scent of this fragrance conjures up a feeling of the earth and sky colliding, paired with an unexpected hint of masculinity”
Artist: Sandra Chung Nga-shan
Inspiration
“The clean, soapy and spicy scents, are both relaxing and fresh but also sexy and soft. The piece captures the moment when all these elements collide together in the air. It is an elaborate movement that explores the intersections between sensibility and art practice. Reflecting on the relationship between form and space.”

“The scent is quite sweet, subtly floral with a hint of woody green. It reminds me of the very first hours of sunlight. Sea breeze, water ripples, the outdoors - light, fragments and terrain from the literal to the metaphorical come to mind; petal like forms and white textiles like those from a luxury hotel. It is quiet - a sense of calm at the start of a new day.”

“A subtle first breeze that rises with a strong and overwhelming after scent, I sense the strong and bold character behind this feminine figure. Subtly powerful, full of colour and imagination.”
