BIG IN JAPANDI

When East meets West

Words by Joey Wong

We’ve spent years worshipping Scandi style, with its clean lines and simple shapes. Now, there’s a new aesthetic to swoon over: Japandi, a clever portmanteau of ‘Japan’ and ‘Scandi’.

While the concept of hygge invites cosiness and comfort, wabi-sabi celebrates the imperfect. Both carry an innate appreciation for natural materials, craftsmanship and time-tested simplicity. Here are four steps to start incorporating the style into your space.

STEP 1: LESS IS MORE

There’s a sense of calm that’s central to Japandi interiors. Space is integral; the less clutter, the better, and with less comes more time to be intentional. That’s more time to ponder placement and pairings, for example, rather than pure happenstance.

STEP 2: NATURAL INSTINCTS

Distinctly Scandi design tropes like wood, terracotta pots, and rugs and textiles rendered from natural fibres set the scene. A careful curation of indoor plants brings a tangible presence of nature to the indoors, with leafy goodness a proven way to calm the mind and relieve stress.

STEP 3: STAY NEUTRAL

Visual stimulation is limited. Instead, lighter neutrals (favoured by the Scandi aesthetic) and darker neutrals (favoured by Japanese minimalism) create spaces void of colour — yet another way to foster a sense of peace.

STEP 4: TIME AFTER TIME

Seek out artisanal craftsmen and know the maker behind your purchases. Woven tapestries of stories and techniques add more meaning to each item you’ve now chosen to surround yourself with. These are chronicles to be passed down alongside each armchair, rug and coffee table.
