Just as a bride’s wedding dress reflects her personal style, the blooms reflect the mood and theme of the big day, adding extra colour and texture, as well as a considered design element to the setting. We sat down with Diane Nittke, Creative Director of Hong Kong-based flower boutique Ellermann to get her insider tips on wedding flowers, from selecting key blooms to maximising the longevity of your arrangements. Nittke is no stranger to creating wedding flowers, from stunning bouquets to transforming grand hotel ballrooms and outdoor ceremonies at country clubs; she will ensure no detail is forgotten.

What’s in season?

Flowers are seasonal and many are not available at certain times of the year. “Peonies and dahlias are available in summer but not in winter, so before you start selecting your key flowers or planning your mood board, you will need to check the availability of your favourite blooms with your florist,” says Nittke. Those having an outdoor wedding with lots of sunlight will also need to consider different flower options to suit the climate. “Delicate flowers that easily wilt are not suitable for open-air events, so consider heat-resistant flowers such as garden spray rose, orchids and jasmine.”

Key flower is paramount

Once you’ve selected your key flowers you can decide your theme and colour palette. This is a key part to planning your wedding, so avoid selecting a theme first as it will be more difficult to match the theme to the flowers. From bouquets to tableware the key flower, colour palette and theme should all coordinate to reflect the overall mood of the wedding. Nittke suggests enhancing the banquet table setting supplied by your venue with additional flowers and props, giving a more personal feel and coherence throughout the day. “Choose lead flower colours and add complimentary blooms to style the table setting. The table arrangements should be of various sizes and heights to add further interest.”

Floral Favours

Wedding favours are a delightful gesture to show your guests you appreciate them joining the day’s festivities. Instead of making gifts or candies, give wedding flowers as a token of thanks and let others enjoy the gorgeous blooms for longer. Nittke adds “This is a great green idea, to prevent floral waste after the wedding banquet. You can set a bouquet wrapping station at the end of your wedding party - florists will nicely package the arrangements for guests to take home with wrapping paper and gorgeous ribbons.”
