Strong Romance Cascading ruffles and flowers deliver a feminine flourish
to 4 Moncler Simone Rocha

Words by Harriet Quick

“I wanted to create a uniform of voluminous silhouettes, deconstructed proportions and a new idea of a practical femininity,” says Simone Rocha. “Originally inspired by the concept of “Mountain.” My first collection for Moncler has taken inspiration from the adventurous Victorian mountain climbers of the 19th century, the idea translated through the silhouette, volume and structure. The collection explores these ideas while entwining my interpretation of femininity with the utilitarian practicality of Moncler.” In essence this reinterpretation fuses the classic Moncler down fabric with a delicate yet functional volume and silhouette.

The Dublin born creative behind the 4 Moncler Simone Rocha collection is seasoned in the language of strong women and romance. She was named Womenswear Designer of the Year at the London Fashion Awards in 2016, and throughout her stellar career, Rocha has evolved a design language - layered tulle dresses, voluminous coats, pearl-decorated slides, broderie Anglaise skirts - that permits women to be powerful and lyrical at the same time. To note: she’s a constant reader of Chinese-British novelist Xiaolu Guo.

For Moncler Genius, Rocha stretched the remit, delivering ready to wear pieces including quilted dresses, ruffle fronted skirts, techno tulle slips and flower embroidered poet sleeved rainproof coats alongside duvet jackets fashioned with her signature, waisted voluminous proportions. The palette of glossy and matt black, scarlet, ivory and powder pink is classically seductive.

Global nomads and entrepreneurial pioneers will find a lot that chimes in this high functioning capsule that could descend a mountain and go to black tie celebration without changing gear. As for Rocha, who lives in east London with her partner and their three-year-old daughter, Valentine Ming McLoughlin, those belted bell-shaped coats will be just the thing for a canal-side walk to her studio.
