Finding Fulfillment in Food Ricky Cheuk You are what you eat

For former international rugby player Ricky Cheuk, a life in fitness seems almost inevitable. But it wasn’t always the case. Having spent a few years in the rat race that is the high-stress world of finance, Cheuk reached a point in his life where he was losing sight of what made him happy. “I took a step back to reflect on my goals. I’ve always loved food and after working in the financial industry and not being entirely happy, I felt I needed a change. What better way than to work with something that I’ve always enjoyed so much?”

His journey into healthy eating began with his sports career. “With any sports, you have to be in top shape and that’s how eating well became an important part of my life,” he explains. “My vision was to create a community where everyone can enjoy working out together and relaxing together.” And thus The Elephas was born.

The coffee and Thai health food bar that sits adjacent to the Warrior Academy fitness studio located in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong has become one of the city’s go-to spots to get a workout and healthy bite to eat. “In Hong Kong, it’s really hard to find somewhere that’s convenient to grab some healthy food after a good workout. I’ve always loved Thai food so I wanted to do something around that cuisine. It’s also synonymous with fish sauce and to be able to create a menu with good tasting healthy Thai food, without the added MSG, is one of the most important aspects of creating The Elephas.”

For Cheuk, living better is leading a well-balanced life both emotionally and physically. “I think being happy is the most important aspect in life and I do believe that if you eat healthy and work out, you will overall feel healthier and be happier,” the entrepreneur says. And for challenging days? “I work out. Working out is my quiet time when I get to be in my zone and reflect on things for a clearer mindset. I’ve also always believed in positive energy. Being positive and helping others in all situations can lead you through your toughest times. Giving is definitely better than receiving. You receive so much joy and accomplishment by being able to help others and bring positivity into your life.”
