On Lane Crawford’s quest for the perfect pout, we ask a handful of makeup artists for their best hack when it comes to creating their own flawless lip looks.

We’re taking notes.

“Having been a red lipstick wearer basically since birth, it was a strange moment when I started gravitating towards berry instead. Depending on the shade of “berry” I’m using, a lip exfoliation is key, as darker shades or matte variations can stick to dryness on lips. Apply one to lips in small circles with your finger (and then wipe off), or use a damp toothbrush to give it a gentle boost. A bit of non-glossy balm worked into the lip will prep for, but won’t ruin, a matte application.” – Amy Strozzi

“Always start with a good base. Make sure the lips are flake-free and well hydrated before applying anything to help it last longer. The ultimate go-to shade for any woman is a good red.” – Alexa Bui

“I use Q-tips instead of a lip brush; I use one side for applying lip colour, and the other size for removing access lipstick and cleaning up the edges. It’s the easiest and fastest way to a perfect lip!” – Alva Chung

“The best way to keep lipstick in place is to use lip liner to protect the lip colour from bleeding. If you want to create the illusion of fuller lips, apply the lip liner just above the upper edge of your top lip and just below the lower edge of your bottom lip.” – Megumi Sekine

“Use concealer to perfect your lip shape, and add highlighter onto your cupid’s bow to open up your lips and create a fuller pout.” – Kalam Chu
