How much character and spirit can a new sofa, coffee table or sideboard give your home or office? The answer is plenty. Several makers are re-examining the tenants of modernism to channel creativity and innovation into furniture and objects that are full of good spirits.
One such is Self, a UK based practice set up by founder Kevin Self, who works with master craftsman to restore and give new life to mid-century classics. The ‘re-born’ pieces are a joy to behold with linear teak sideboards fixed-up with colourful lacquered doors in sulphur yellow, grey and mint and chairs re-upholstered in arresting fabrics and trims. Self’s pieces honour true functionality but they also offer an enjoyable way to time travel.
Milanese company, Driade was set up in 1968 by art director, Enrico Astori, who conceived his company as a ‘factory of art.’ Over the decades Driade has collaborated with numerous makers including Philippe Starck and Neri & Hu and the tradition continues. Great ideas for now include the striking ‘Archipelago’ frameless mirrors by Fredrikson Stallard and the vibrant Zagazig coffee tables in digitally printed laminate. These irregular shapes would charm in any space. Sleek and yet distinctive mid-century inspired living spaces are all the proof you need that this design style is truly timeless.
