Meet Feng Chen Wang | Lane Crawford

In her newest collection, London-based Chinese designer Feng Chen Wang wanted to “re-define what ‘Made in China’ means and how we actually make things in China. “It is a great source of pride to me to be able to produce the collection in my own country and that is something I wanted to share this season,” she says, a fitting remit for the Royal College of Art graduate’s first solo show.

Having lived in Shanghai, London and New York, the designer stayed true to the elements she has come to be known for - utilitarian details, 3D lettering and bold silhouettes. Worn proudly in true statement style, the ‘Made in China’ tees are sure to be a winner.

But more than just a “Made In” label, Wang wanted to explore the concept through the technical details. “It’s also about what cannot be seen in images or the runway show,” she says, “such as the details of the way we stitched the garments together, and how that gives each piece a unique structure that you can appreciate when you touch and wear the clothes.”

Inspired by workwear in China, such as the pink gloves that many labourers wear, as well as the traditional functional fabrics of denim and cotton used, this is a collection that elevates and celebrates all that the phrase “Made In China” means today.
