Creating Your Feel-Good Home Interior designer’s tips on how to turn your home into a feel-good sanctuary

While there really is no place like home, interior designer YC Chen, founder of hoo design, prefers to say, "There’s no place like your home - after all, where else can you feel truly at ease when you step through the door and breathe out?”

We asked Chen to share his thoughts on how he uses design elements to create a feel-good home. First, he says, “It needs to feel human and natural. I need to feel comfortable and relaxed everywhere in my home. I want to fill it up with good accessories, my own artworks and my toy collections. That makes me feel good.”

Indeed, the key to creating a personal sanctuary is making sure every area of your home is liveable, uplifting and filled with items and elements that reflect your individuality and personal taste.

“Keeping things simple, organised and tidy makes me feel peaceful,” says Chen. Start by decluttering and tidying each room, then consider colour, décor and other elements that will lift your space and reflect your personal taste. Chen explains that natural colour palettes such as white, grey, beige, black, and wood work well, but reminds us that ambient light is very important. “In my home I kept the walls white so it's bright in the daytime and it makes my home very cosy,” he explains. Chen suggests contrasting natural tones and soft lighting with bursts of sharp colours, like yellow or purple, and making sure to have lots of plants around your home.

Before shopping the latest designs and trends, take time to consider what makes you feel good and how you tend to express yourself. Chen’s chosen natural colour palette makes it easy for him to infuse his personal taste into every room. “I love designer chairs and displaying chic collectible toys here and there. I’m a big fan of mid-century modern design, so I incorporate brass highlights.”

When Chen consults with clients who want to change things up in their home, he always starts with the owner’s favourites and their experiences. “Perhaps they like a certain city, or maybe they have a hobby like photography or surfing that they’re passionate about. I look at how they dress to see if their taste in fashion can be translated into the interior design of their home. Only then will I show them references and trends, and start to work out what they like and how we can combine elements of their personality with current trends to create a design language in their home.”

With these tips, it’s time to get inspired to create your own feel-good space. Chen mostly looks to Pinterest and Instagram. “I follow interior design magazines, photographers, fashion and furniture designers, architectural firms - basically anything stylish.”
