Beauty on Trial: Dry Mask Edition Our beauty editor reports back with dry masking findings

Dry masks are praised for being perfect on the go - even the world’s top makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury slips one on in taxis between appointments. Apart from their ease of application, what else is worth knowing about mess-free masking?

In the name of investigation, we assign a beauty editor to trial the dry masking trend and report back. Read on to discover three key learnings.

Don’t let the lack of visible formula throw you off

“I’m not going to lie, I was a little sceptical about the concept of dry masking. I’m used to my sheet masks dripping in serum. How many active ingredients could possibly be pumped into paper-thin fabric? I did some online research to discover that through an innovation which Charlotte Tilbury calls a ‘bio-mimetic vector delivery system’, there’s plenty. The skin’s warmth turns these ingredients from dry and solid to a liquid, so they can penetrate the epidermis more deeply than regular masks. The proof was in the pudding: 15 minutes after wearing one my skin looked well-rested, ‘glowy’, and super soft to touch.”

Be savvy with your timing

“I made a rookie error of trying one of Nannette de Gaspé’s ‘waterless’ dry masks before bedtime. While it definitely didn’t hurt, my hydrated zero-residue afterglow was only seen by me, which seems like a waste. Unlike a lot of masks such as acid and clay that work best a day or two before a big event, dry mask results can be reaped instantly. In hindsight, I should have taken better advantage of their radiance-inducing benefits and applied one before going out for dinner with friends, at the very least.”

Each mask is a gift that keeps on giving

“When it comes to trying new beauty products, I have a habit of being a little hasty. Instead of diligently reading the instructions, I tend to skim for the number of minutes to leave something on for and ignore everything else. If I had taken the time to read a little further, I would have known that dry masks can be used up to three times when placed back in their sealed pouch and each has the shelf life of up to three months when open. So, before you do what I did and throw your mask haphazardly in the bin, saviour those glow-inducing benefits and wrap it back up to use it again, and again.”
