Art at its Heart A different way to experience a city and its culture this festive family season
“The idea came about during the summer of 2013 when I was living in Paris,” says Queenie Rosita Law, a winner of Lane Crawford’s The Next New 2016 and brainchild behind art design studio Production Q and The City Book. “I had just finished working for a company and was waiting to return to my home city of Hong Kong. I wandered the streets every day and I would see different groups of travellers and would wonder how, even though we were all at the same place at the same time, our experiences were inevitably quite different from one another.”
“It’s interesting how a city can present itself like an open hand: we can wander it how we place and absorb it until it becomes our own personal experience.”
As a graduate of Graphic Design from London’s Central Saint Martin, Law had specialised in illustration and would always visit museums or galleries when abroad. Moved by the emotions, feelings and voices that artists try to convey in their work, Law was inspired to create The City Book, a guide that allows the modern-day traveller to see her home city of Hong Kong through the lens of different artists’ stories and physical formats.
“It’s for people who enjoy art and creativity and are searching for a different way to experience a city and its culture. It’s also a souvenir to share with friends from home.”
Of course, so much of what makes Hong Kong home for Law is her family. “My family are the people I can discuss my dreams and visions with, who bounce back ideas and motivate me to become a better person. People whose opinions and advice I would seek and absorb; who I can be so vulnerable in front of and they would just be there for me.”
And with so much success to celebrate this year, how is Law going to make this festive season even more special? “I think I am starting to appreciate small things more, like to be able to spend time with your loved ones. It is such a blessing to be in the moment with people that care about you.”
