Your bag is empty
It’s starting to feel a lot like the holidays, courtesy of Jonathan Adler’s home décor and accessories. Lane Crawford visits the American designer in his New York office to talk gifting and Christmas.
“There’s always a collection in mind,” says the artist, designer and author as we take a peek into his pottery studio, filled with half-spun prototypes in a glorious array of colours and textures. “I’m in there all the time working with them so the stuff that you see them working on right now are these pots that I’m doing, with this new bronzey glaze that we developed. It’s a very exploratory process and we go through squillions of iterations before making the final piece. There’s new stuff happening all the time.”
Known for his bold and stylish designs, Jonathan Adler is the natural choice for anyone looking to inject a dose of contemporary glamour into their interiors, and the American designer’s penchant for vibrant colours and make-you-smile forms is infectious.
So what happens to all the pieces that don’t make the cut? “You’re in it!” he says gesturing to his colourful office. “All this is work in progress stuff that has made it, hasn’t made it and all of the above!” The “Fantasy Factory” - a reference to Warhol’s Factory - as Adler calls his Soho, New York headquarters may well and truly feel like Christmas everyday.
“I have a genteel English husband, Simon, and a Jewish family. Simon and I are sort of Christmas elves as we both work in design and retail, so by the time the holidays come around, we’re so knackered that we want to escape.”
But not of course before their one Christmas tradition: “We have these ornaments from The Liberace Museum, and we put them on either side of the fireplace - that’s the only decorating we do - because we’re so knackered from decorating everybody else’s holidays so that’s our own personal tradition. And then what we do is have a family dinner in New York, and then escape the family and head straight to Palm Beach to completely decompress.”
